The Cherokees had been friendly with the British in America since the early 1700s, siding with them against the French in the French and Indian Wars. Colonial encroachment by settlers provoked them into a two-year war with South Carolina, and the land cessions that ended the war fueled resentment that came to a head with the outbreak of the American Revolution.
