Cumberland Compact

When Donelsons fleet arrived in Cumberland, the settlements population increased to over 300 people. To establish some local government, the citizens entered into what they called the Cumberland Compact. The new government gave twelve judges legal authority, each of which could be dismissed for neglect of duty. Another important part of the compact was a provision for an office where the settlers could but land from the Transylvania Land Company
